Edgar Allen Poe was born on January 19, 1809. He was the middle of three children. From an early age death and loneliness surrounded him. By the time he was three years old he would suffer the loss of both of his parents. As a result he and his two siblings were separated. Poe was sent to live with the Mr. Allen, a successful tobacco farmer and his family, while his brother and sister were sent to live with other families. As a young man he excelled academically, but struggled to survive through college with less than a third of the funds he needed to get by. His resources were so depleted that he resorted to burning his furniture for warmth. Having now been humiliated socially by his financial disability a discouraged Poe returned home to his betrothed only to find that she was now engaged to another man! With this at the young age of eighteen he left the comforts of the Allen estate and joined the army in search of adventure when he published his first book. The theme of Poe completing a work after experiencing a tragedy is one that would follow him throughout his life. His second volume was completed shortly after hearing of his sergeant mother's untimely death. His third compilation was finished following the learning of his sergeant father's rapid recovery from the death of his wife as he had taken a new wife. Poe hadn't been invited to the nuptials, let alone properly informed. He lashed out violently in a letter expressing the wrongs done to him by Allen in their entirety. About this time after only eight short months at West Point Poe was expelled. It should be no surprise that his next work was then completed shortly after. Now thoroughly broken Poe returned to his late father's estate with an assortment of family members in tow. One cousin robs him blind in the middle of the night while another becomes the new object of his affection. He married his Virginia and experienced a blissful marriage for a few short years after which tuberculosis claimed her life as it had his mother, brother, and sergeant mother's. It was then that Poe had truly lost the two loves of his life, his two reasons for existence, his wife and his writing. He did not write for several months. He himself only continued to live for two additional years. During these years he spent what was left of his life traveling and engaging in what seemed to be frivolous relationships here and there with women from all over the place. Searching for what he had lost with the death of his Virginia. Poe died at age forty far away from home and among strangers. He ended his life just as it had begun alone.
I find it very interesting how Edgar Allen Poe's reality really affected his writing. You can tell, especially after following up on Poe with the link, that Poe had been surrounded by depression and lonliness. After reading "The Raven" it shows why Edgar Allen Poe is so respected and adored in gothic literature. Also, Edgar Allen Poe's death was as mysterious as alot of his work considering the fact that all his death records are missing and alcoholism is the only apparent reason.

Really? I haven't heard anything about that. That should be a very interesting film. I bet Johnny dep plays the lead role. That would just make my day. :)
DeleteI never knew how hard of a life he had, your blog was really informative. I feel sorry for him especially how a lot of people associate him in a negative way.

Thank you! I tried to fit as much as I could in there without boring you all to death.
DeleteI as well as many other people have always seen Poe as a literary genius, although seemingly crazy, still one of the greats. Many as well as myself would classify him as near insane, but I myself would give that as a compliment. Poe really is one of my favorite poets; Not only in his work, but in his life story does he have a journey of crests and troughs that keep the reader's mouth gaping, and eyes desiring. Your post legitimately made me smile (unusual?) just because his personal life seems so surreal that you have to remember that his mere existence is a huge fan base.

Hey almost doesn't count right? Lol
Deletei love his story the raven and i ould really would like to watch the movie and i think he is a awesome writer
ReplyDeleteI think it's funny we all find him so nutty. In reality he was probably one of the better functioning individuals of his time. I'm sure they didn't have therapy back then and yet he "journaled." he provided himself with an outlet for all of his grief. This outlet turned into wonderful works and yet we label him insane. I wonder how closely related insanity is to genius.
DeleteI absolutely love Poe's writing, so I found it interesting that after each tragedy, he wrote.

To think up some of the stories that Poe did during his time, something surreal had to have been going on inside his head. His life was that of a tortured artist that so many had followed. Seems ironic that in so many cases in order to convey such an emotional and timeless series of stories one must go through such dark experiences of their own; and it never seems to end well.

Poe's work are some on the best known tragedy poem in America. They fill the body with suspense, and are truly mind blowing reads.

Poe has to be one of the nuttiest but most amazing writers ever! his stories are so mysterious i love it!
ReplyDeletePoe is a prolific writer that would catch the readers attention. The raven is probably one of his best work of arts
ReplyDeleteWow! I didn't know Poe's life was so miserable and full of loss. After all of his pain it's surprising that he didn't kill those that wronged him like he did the characters in his works. It's interesting to see where the inspiration to his works came from.

Luckily poe was an intellectual and not an idiot. Lol instead of acting on rage he acted by using his anger; misery to his advantage.

I have never really heard much about Poe's life up until now. I can definitely see why most of his work was so dark. I actually really enjoy his work though and also can't wait to see the movie "The Raven'.

Why do we keep reading about crazy people's poems/stories? I guess only the crazy people write the more interesting things that we can analyze in class. Good short read on his life though! Didn't know he was a part of the army.
